How to make a Kurt Cobain costume
Labeled as the “voice of a generation” for Generation X during the 1990s, Kurt Cobain was the singer/guitarist and chief songwriter for alternative rock pioneers Nirvana. Spearheading the movement known as “grunge” and taking it from its Seattle roots to a worldwide musical phenomenon, Kurt Cobain died on April 8th, 1994 and is still revered as a musical icon years after his death.
Honor — or lampoon — Cobain with an easy DIY costume. Here’s how:
##Things You’ll Need##
* scissors (to cut wig to chin-length)
* Brown Magic Marker (to create “roots” on wig)
* Old t-shirt
* Faded, torn jeans
* Converse sneakers or any other tennis shoe
* Grey cardigan sweater
##Putting together your Kurt Cobain costume##
Step 1: Pick up a blonde wig and some scissors to cut it to chin-length with. When cutting, cut the synthetic hair on a diagonal, snipping small one-inch sections at a time and angling them inward to nick Cobain’s choppy hairstyle.
Step 2: Grab a brown magic marker to add some “roots” to your wig near the top of your wig.
Step 3: Layer on a grey cardigan (easy to find in a thrift shop or grandpa’s attic!) over a t-shirt. Any t-shirt will work, but if you have one that is faded with a graphic on the front, even better!
Step 4: Put on a pair of grey or stonewashed jeans that either already have holes in the knees or strategic cuts or slice them yourself.
Step 5: Step into a pair of Converse sneaks left with laces loose and consider adding some props of your choice. If you’re a Cobain fan, an acoustic guitar is a great prop. If you’re not a fan, tote around a toy shotgun for maximum shock value.
