Surely, you’ve heard that Dora the Explorer has been given a makeover. In an effort to appeal to a different demographic beyond the young children who love the plucky little girl’s geography-hopping adventures, Nickelodeon is creating a spin-off series with Dora as a tween.
Some parents are up in arms about Dora trading in her trademark bob and backpack for lipgloss and fashion. The alarms raised about “tween Dora” concern whether or not she will “dress appropriately” and if she will forsake her adventures to new places for adventures at the mall. On the flipside, other parents are thrilled that their children who grew up with Dora and are becoming “tweens” themselves, can still have a positive young role model to watch on television. Dora will still be bilingual, but she — like her audience — is growing up.

In 1969, Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrissette teamed with a young puppeteer named Jim Henson to create a television show geared towards educating children but was still entertaining enough for parents to enjoy alongside their kids. 40 years later, that very show, Sesame Street, is still growing strong.
Unique in its approach, the PBS mainstay combined live-action adults and kids interacting with colorful puppets who inhabited the urban melting pot neighborhood of Sesame Street. Not only did kids learn letters, numbers, and words, they also picked up valueable social skills before heading off to kindergarten and beyond. People from all different ethnicities, religions, and walks of life interacted with kids and puppets, showing just how similar everyone really is. Chances are, kids learned how to deal with insults (thanks to the curmugeonly Oscar the Grouch), friendship from best pals Ernie and Bert, and even attempting to understand death with the passing of beloved store owner, Mr. Hooper.

The teams have been set in stone for the ultimate gridiron challenge to go down on Sunday February 1st, 2009. That’s right! Super Bowl Sunday is almost here!
Scheduled to be held in Tampa, Super Bowl XLIII features the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the Steelers’ dynasty has seen the Pittsburgh franchise make it to the big dance on six occassions and winning five of those six times, this is the very first appearance for the Arizona Cardinals.
Whether you watch it “for the love of the game” or for the commercials, the Super Bowl is always cause for celebration.

With some of the more painful holiday traditions like Black Friday and the inevitable cornucopia of leftover turkey dishes that continue into December, some of the sweeter things about the holiday season are rearing their red noses.
Wednesday at 8PM, CBS affiliates will be airing the stop-motion animation classic, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The Rankin-Bass special first aired 1964 and has been a fond, family tradition. Based on the popular Christmas carol, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the story follows Rudolph from outcast reindeer from Santa’s sleigh team to finding acceptance alongside his friend Hermey the Elf (who would rather be a dentist than make toys in Santa’s workshop) and on the Island of Misfit Toys.
Tune in for the first (and arguably one of the best) of many holiday specials to take the airways by snow-storm this season! Gain some inspiration for some fun holiday costumes for a parade or holiday pageant. Head on over to our “How To” section to see how to make a Yukon Cornelius costume inspired by one of the main characters in Rudolph… Or pick up your own Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or Elf costume!

A tradition that marks the start of the Thanksgiving Day festivities and heralds the onset of the Christmas holiday season, the Macy’s Thanskgiving Parade is now in its 82nd year. Held in New York City and sponsored by the upscale chain department store, this year’s parade is on Thursday November 27th.
Among the featured floats, balloons, and performers are Dora the Explorer, the Harajuku Girls. Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and many more! Miley Cyrus will also be on hand for the festivities, although it’s unknown whether or not she’ll be in full Hannah Montana mode.
And, as always, the special guests of honor, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be there to usher in the holiday season at the parade’s end.

If you’re looking for an original costume idea for your kids this Halloween, maybe you want to look at the Backyardigans. You might have never heard about it (like me), but it’s a television show for children:
“The show is an animated musical-adventure series aimed at children between the ages of 2 and 5[3]. In each episode, the show’s five preschool friends—Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha, and Austin—rely on their vivid imaginations to transform their backyard into completely different worlds, in which they go through many sorts of stories and adventures.” More at Wikipedia
Check the collection of Backyardigans costumes.

If you watch Animal Planet, you know about
Meerkat Manor and The Whiskers

The living story of meerkats surviving in the wild.
This is a really good show, think about it like reality-show meets nature, and it is very entertaining, educational but sometimes sad. I do not watch it religiously, but i find myself switching channels once in a while to see if the little craters are on.
Discover Channel has released a collection of Animal Planet costumes, including, YES you got it right, a meerkat costume! We had, here on CostumZee, a forum discussion going on now for over a year about it, and I am pleased to finally announced that you can buy meerkat costume online at least at one of our online partners.
