Although it won’t hit theatres until March of 2010, photos of Tim Burton’s re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice in Wonderland, are circulating. The film’s look is certainly what you would expect from Burton with a brightly colored, yet gothic-tinged aura about all of his films, including Sweeney Todd and The Corpse Bride.

The film will combine a mixture of live-action actors along with stop-motion animation (like Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas) and digital CGI. Even more ambitiously, this format will later be transposed to 3D — which, judging by the stills and production art, will probably make for a very trippy experience on the other side of the looking glass. Check out the art below and stills to get a sneak peak at what you can expect from this freaky fairy tale made just a tad more twisted:

It looks as if the singing, “human” flowers have made their way into the film!

Additionally, the cast is pretty much in keeping with Tim Burton’s usual crew that he’s worked with before, including perennial muses, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Burton’s partner, Helena Bonham Carter in the role of the Red Queen. Rounding out the cast are familiar faces to Burton’s audiences including veteran actor (and Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock, and Alan Rickman as the hookah-huffing Caterpillar. There are also a number of first-time Burton collaborators on deck for Alice in Wonderland including Little Britain’s Matt Lucas as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts.

The film’s lead is played by Mia Wasikowska, with an action shot of her in her Alice Costume, combining Victorian style with an ethereal flair:

and Oscar-nominated Anne Hathaway lends some additional star power as the kindly White Queen. The normally brunette Hathaway has been “lightened up” somewhat for the role with a sort of sort of elven look, seen below:

While several versions of Alice in Wonderland costumes have been around for quite some time — ranging from the Disney version, to American McGee Goth Alice-inspired costumes — we’re eager to see what officially licensed costumes may come from Tim Burton’s new flick. We’ll probably have to wait until next year, but as more photos and hopefully a trailer emerges, Costumzee will offer some tutorials as to how you can pull together yor own DIY version of these looks and find yourself ahead of the curve!
