Fiddle-dee-dee! Gone With the Wind turns 70! Antebellum costumes ensue!

The film was based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name and a major search was undertaken to cast just the right actress in the role of quintessential Southern belle, Scarlett O’Hara. The role went to British actress Vivian Leigh who set the bar for the high-living, strong-willed, man-chasing, and tempermental Scarlett.
Of course, Scarlett had to have an equally fiery counterpart to make the chemistry and the Gone With the Wind itself so successful. Clark Gable also starred in the film as Scarlett’s on-again, off-again paramour, the womanizing, wheelin’ dealin’ and infinitely cool Rhett Butler.
Perfect for dressing up solo, Scarlett O’Hara makes a great costume for ladies. She has enough outfits to choose from in the film, from her iconic green-and-white party dress:

to hergreen velvet drapery gown. Start off with a black, Scarlett wig with long sausage curls.
Even Yankee men can dress as a Southern Gentleman with a costume strikingly similar to Rhett Butler’s attire in the film:
