About Yule Log

A holiday tradition associated with Christmas or Yule (also known as the Winter Solstice), the brightly burning log that stays lit throughout the 12 Days of Christmas. In ancient times, the Pagan holiday of Yule used the log as a sacred tribute to the chief Norse god, Thor. The oak tree was sacred to him, thus a Yule log of oak was burned for 12 days. The Christians adopted this tradition, usually with Father Christmas depicted carrying a Yule log. This also had a practical element to it since electric or modern central heating was a long way off!

Decorating with a Yule Log

Not everyone has a fireplace, but just about everyone has a DVD player. In a tradition started by Fred Thrower in 1966, then NYC's WPIX TV progrmming director, the Yule log was offered on television for city dwellers who didn't have fireplaces in their apartment, but wanted to take part in a Christmas tradition. Now, you can pick up a Yule Log DVD. Played on a big screen TV, it's just as good as a real Yule Log, without the threat of a fire! It's accompanied by soft, mellow Christmas music and sounds and makes for a great holiday atmosphere if you dim the lights.
