About Wings

Many living creatures have wings, particularly a variety of insects and of course, birds. In birds, they are considered limbs, using a complex bone structure that forms a series of joints covered by a membrane and feathers, enabling birds to lift themselves off of the ground and take to flight. In insects, however, wings are simply an outgrowth of the exoskeleton of the insect and made of a thin membrane that allows them to fly. Many insects have wings, each one being rather different. The butterfly has thick, opaque wings with a variety of colors and/or patterns on their wings, while insects like bees, wasps, and dragonflies have transparent or irridescent wings.

In addition to the wings seen in the animal/insect kingdom, other creatures -- long gone or mystical -- have wings, including the winged horse Pegasus, the flying dinosaur Pteradactyls. Other legendary and powerful creatures like angels, demons, and fairies are also seen with wings, usually feathered, leathery, or sparkly, respectively.

Dressing up with Wings

The perfect finishing and defining touch to a costume, wings add something striking to your look. Dress as an angel of the good or dark variety with large, feathered wings made from real and/or faux feathers in black or white. Each set of angel wings come with elastic or lace straps to wear your wings over your costume, for a powerful, angelic look.

A fairy costume can find its finishing touch with a set of glimmering fairy wings in an irridescent fabric, or a matte fabric in your choice of color ranging from black, purple, to pale pink and every hue in between.

Some fairy wings may also double as butterfly wings or dragonfly wings depending on the coloring -- a great finishing touch to an insect costume to bring science to life!
