About Where’s Waldo

“Where’s Waldo” is a book concept created in 1987 by a UK illustrator. In the UK the books are known as “Where’s Wally.” Martin Handford the creator decided to create a book of full page illustrations with hundreds of tiny characters doing many things, and then hiding Wally or Waldo within the pictures. Waldo is dressed in a red and white hooped shirt with bobble hat, glasses, and a walking stick. The concept was to make Waldo stand out just enough that children would be able to spot him, but that it would also take a few minutes for the child to do so. The books were so successful that Waldo was given a TV series, comics, and even video games. Waldo had friends in the books like Wanda, Oudlaw, Woof, and the Wally Watchers. They each appeared on and off throughout the many books. The last book was published in 2008 called Where’s Wally A £1 World Book Day Book. A live action film has been slated to be created based on the concept, but a release date is unknown. Waldo has been to many of the World’s countries hiding out in pictures to delight children.

Mentioned above we discussed what Waldo wears in the books. It is this information that can be used to create the Waldo costume for those interested. Waldo costumes will be made in adult and children sizes. To create the look a red and white shirt is needed. The shirt is considered a hooped shirt in which the stripes run horizontal, and there is a bit of rounding to the collar. The pants for the costume need to be blue jeans or blue knit pants. Accessories of the costume include a red and white stripped bobble hat with rounded black frame glasses. A wooden walking stick is also needed for the costume. You can add books, camping equipment, and black shoes to the costume as well.
