About Top Hat
At the turn of the 18th century, tricorn hats began to lose favor and a new sort of chapeau began to emerge "heads" above the competition. The top hat (also known as the "stove pipe hat," the "chimney hat," or the "cylinder hat," due to its tall, elongated yet circular shape.) The hat features a small brim that extends around the circumference of the crown and a tall, cylindrical shape extending from the crown terminating in a flat top. Although the types of material used in constructing the hat varied, the top hat was popular with all classes with silk being the most widely used material.
Dressing up with a Top Hat
A versatile costume accessory, the Top Hat adds the perfect finishing touch to a number of costumes. Whether you're dressing as either a male or female magician or requiring a dapper dandy look, there is a top hat to suit your costume. If you're a comic fan, DC's Zatanna sports a plain black top hat for her magician's costume.
If you happen to be a movie buff, wear a top hat for a great Fred Astaire costume (because if Fred didn't put on his top hat, he'd just have the white tails) for a "Fred n' Ginger" couple's costume straight out of old Hollywood!
A top hat even serves a horror-themed look, as well as a Doomed Groom. It's also indispensible for a good Slash costume!
Or, wear one in red, white, and blue for an Uncle Sam costume!
And of course, you can play up your top hat for laughs with either a blue or orange top hat for your fine formalwear as sported by Dumb and Dumber's Harry and Lloyd. Nothing says "classy" like an orange top hat with a ruffled tux. Nothing!
