About Three Musketeer

The Three Musketeers were first produced in a book by Alexandre Dumas of France. He created a story in which the Musketeers needed to save the king from Cardinal Richelieu and his intrigues. There were originally three musketeers, but in the beginning of the novel we have a man that wanted to become a musketeer known as d’Artagnan, who in the end becomes the fourth musketeer. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are all great friends who believe in “One for all and all for one.” Since the book is set during Louis XIII reign many of the costumes have reflected that time period in the movies. The Three Musketeers has been made into a movie twice. The first movie was in 1973 that also spawned the Four Musketeers with David Hasselhoff. The last time the movie was made was in 1993 by Disney with several well known actors. It has been animated a few times as well in cartoons and the Mickey movie version.

Dressing up as Three Musketeer

The period of clothing for a Musketeer is going to be from the late 16th and early 17th century. To start you have the very popular tunic and hose for the men. The Three Musketeer generally wore a blue tunic with a white cross to symbolize that they were the kings men and there to serve on his orders. To be true to the character this would be the first costume to choose. The costume is completed with a hat and feather with the typical French sword of the time. These costumes can be found in children’s sized up to men’s. Other characters to dress as would be a lady musketeer or Countess de Winter. Cardinal Richelieu is also someone you might choose for a more sinister aspect. It is a simple costume with Cardinal red robes. There are other variations on the tunic and hose costumes such as darker colors and different ways of creating the cross.
