About The Muppets

The plush, puppet creations of puppeteer/visionary Jim Henson, The Muppets had long been a part of the Sesame Street family as realistic creatures based on actual animals, or as friendly, furry monsters since 1969. Even earlier, Henson's creations were shown on other television variety shows, like "Sam and Friends" in 1955. However, it wasn't until 1976 that the Muppets got their own television show. The format was simple: A celebrity guest star would appear on the half-hour variety show and participate in skits and witty banter with the puppet cast. The very realistic characters included Kermit the Frog who ran the show behind the scenes; Miss Piggy the high-maintenance, overly dramatic star of many a skit who was madly in love with Kermit; Fozzie Bear, an aspiring comedian, and many others. The show took place in the fictional Muppet Theatre and the songs and skits performed took center stage as much as the backstage storylines and drama.

It's not easy bein' green, but it's easy to dress as Kermit the Frog with a costume and/or mask modeled after the organized amphibian. Make it a couple's costume dressed as the stylish Miss Piggy with a mask and purple gown. Or, dress as some of the other fun and funny characters, such as Fozzie with a faux fur, plush costume; blue weirdo Gonzo, wild and crazy houseband drummer, Animal; or even cult favorite hecklers Statler and Waldorf!
