About The Little Mermaid

Disney created an adaptation of the Little Mermaid a fairytale written by Hans Christian Anderson. Anderson was a Danish poet. He wrote a tale of a young mermaid wanting to give up her life in the sea for life on land. She fell in love with a human prince. The story was first published in 1837. Disney takes this basic story and adapts it for children in 1989. A sequel was created in 2000 with a return to the sea for Ariel and her daughter. First though, the plot is pretty simple. Ariel is a red haired mermaid and daughter of King Trident. She is fanciful often exploring in regions she should not. One night she is looking above the sea watching a birthday celebration for Prince Eric. He is on a ship which suddenly goes down in a storm. Ariel feels she must rescue the prince and falls in love. Eric also falls in love, but has no idea who she is. In a bargain to get feet Ariel trades her voice with the sea witch. The witch then puts her own plot in motion trying to get the prince for her husband.

Dressing up as the Little Mermaid

Little Mermaid costumes will vary depending on size. There are adult and children costumes available. For children the costumes are often a dress, with a top in purple with a bottom of blue green. The very bottom at the feet is a layered ruffle design to act like the flippers of a mermaid’s tail. These costumes are generally made from nylon and polyester fabric. Arm pieces and a head band come with the costume. The arm bands are green with a crown for the head piece. You can also add a red wig to the costume to be more like Ariel. Adult costumes provide a fin which lays behind the feet to make walking easier. It can also have a swim suit top rather than be a full dress. There are definitely plenty of choices such as blue green dresses for when Ariel is human. Don’t forget an Eric costume if you want to make it a couples idea. You could also have flounder Ariel’s friend.
