About the Statue of Liberty

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free... I lift my lamp beside the golden door." So says the inscription of the first lady that immigrants coming through Ellis Island to great them to their new home. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from France in 1886. The team of sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (who designed France's famous Eiffel Tower), and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc were responsible for the artistic, symbolic, and complex interior and exterior structure of the massive statue. Lady Liberty herself stands 151 feet tall, but including her pedestal, she stands 305 feet in the air. Originally constructed of glistening copper, time has oxidized the copper and the Statue of Liberty as we know her, has been a welcoming shad of green.
