About Spats

Worn by both men and women in the late 19th century and the early 20th century, spats were a sort of shoe covering/decoration that were worn over the shoe and underneath pants. Although spats were worn by proper gentlemen in Europe and America, spats became associated with a seedier gangster crowd in the 1930s. Dastardly yet dapper, gangsters often completed their pinstriped ensembles with a pair of spats over the tops of their shoes. The spats were a cloth covering that hooked beneath the sole of the shoe. Decorative and functional buttons decorated the spats along the outter side of them.
