About Southern Belles

Derived from "antebellum," the term for the period several decades before the Civil War, Southern belles typified the female members of upper-class, landowning gentry in the southern part of the United States. The term still applies as a general moniker to describe girls in the South today, thanks to a number of films with strong representations of tough, but wholly feminine Southern ladies who still exist today.

Dressing up as a Southern Belle

In sizes to fit adult women and little girls and terrific for Civil War re-enactments or general parties, get gussied up as a beautiful Southern Belle from the days of {Scarlett O'Hara} with several gorgous antebellum-inspired costumes. Speaking of the "Gone With the Wind" heroine, a reproduction of Scarlett's famous garden party dress is available, with layers of frothy white trimmed in a bright, kelly green and topped with a green-trimmed bonnet. Accessorize your look with some delicate gloves, a Southern belle wig with long, springy sausage curls, and a parasol to protect yourself from the hot southern sun. For a finishing touch, pick a pretty fan in a coordinating color to your gown. An important part of Southern belle communication, these pre-War damsels often spoke in code using lacy fans to denote flirtation or convey messages across a room to other belles and beaus at parties and cotillions.
