About Skeleton

A skeleton is a framework of bones that supports the body of a human or animal and houses and protects the internal organs and soft tissues of the body. It is the skeleton, in conjunction with joints, muscles and ligaments attached to the skeleton that allows a living being to move around of their own accord. The human body, on average, contains approximately 206 bones, the largest of which is the femur, or thigh bone. Throughout life, the skeleton and bones grow along with the body to carry it throughout various stages of life, from infancy to childhood, adulthood, and eventual old age. Over time, the skeleton can weaken due to a lack of calcium in the bones known as osteoporosis.
