The duties will vary depending on the county. The term sheriff actually hailed from the Anglo-Saxons. The modern usage of the word and duties was started in 1790 with Wilson. Many times the Sheriff was also referred to as a Marshall, especially in the old west. Sheriffs could vary in the older days in which some did not have education to become the sheriff, but actually assumed the duties because they wanted to have law and order, and they could also shoot. Now most Sheriffs are hired through the county, but not always elected.
