About Sesame Street
In 1969, Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrissette conceived a childrens' television program for PBS that featured live action actors alongside colorful Muppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. This show, which is still going strong today 40 years later, was called Sesame Street. Through hour-long episodes comprised of short, funny, and educational vignettes, Sesame Street gave pre-kindergarten kids a head start by teaching them letters, numbers, reading and arithmetic skills. Set in an urban, big-city neighborhood, kids also learned bits of Spanish language expanding their cultural horizons. Additionally, the friendly adults and puppets on the show interacted with kids to teach them social values and how to connect and get along with others.
