A sceptre or scepter is a symbolic rod. This rod or staff was held by the ruling monarch of a country to symbolize their power. It was considered a necessary element to finish the royal regalia. The first sceptres are known to have existed during Ancient Egypt and Greece. The Book of Esther references a biblical rod. Agamemnon, Herodotus, and even Zeus have been known to be depicted with a scepter. A sceptre can be made from different materials depending on who was holding it. Most historical sceptres were created with gold or the most precious metals of the time. Occasionally marble, wood, and bronze were used to create sceptres. The staff could be a long stick, with no integral details. On the other hand most of them had a cap which could be a bird, or other symbol of the community. Jewels were also placed into the metal, as another sign of wealth. Rubies, diamonds, sapphires, and other jewels could have been used depending on the location of the royalty and their colors. A few sceptres even depicted coat of arms.
