About Scarlet O'Hara

Scarlet O'Hara is a strong-willed Southern belle from the Civil War era, and the fictional protagonist of author Margaret Mitchell's novel, "Gone With the Wind." The book was made into a motion picture in 1939. A major search was undertaken by MGM to cast the perfect actress in the role of the spunky Scarlett. After much deliberation, Vivien Leigh was awarded the role, opposite Clark Gable as Scarlet's on-again, off-again paramour, the no-nonsense Rhett Butler.

The character of Scarlet O'Hara was a wealthy, spoiled woman who lives on her family's plantation, Tara before the start of the Civil War. Her carefree existance of elaborate parties and mint juleps comes to an end with the start of the Civil War and Scarlet takes charge of her life after the family plantation is burned down. She marries for money and is widowed several times, always emerging on top, declaring "Tomorrow is another day."

Dressing up as Scarlet O'Hara

One of the most famous of all Southern belles -- real or fictional -- is Scarlet O'Hara. Unlike Miss Scarlet, you won't have to rip down your draperies and make a dress out of curtains since there are a variety of styles. Copy one of the most famous costumes Scarlet wore at her garden party with a costume featuring a multi-tiered white dress with each layer trimmed with a bright emerald green satin ribbon and a satin ribbon sash around the waist. The dress comes in an off-the-shoulder style with short, cap sleeves with the neckline trimmed in a green floral print as well as the sleeves done with a scalloped green ribbon. Also included is a white bonnet tied with a matching green ribbon.

Accessorize with a lace parasol and a Scarlet wig with long, black sausage curls, the popular style of the 1860s.
