About Scarecrow

Scarecrows are also known as "straw men" -- usually constructed of burlap bags and old patchwork clothes stuffed with straw to look like a floppy dummy. Traditionally, these scarecrows were used as their names implied, to scare away crows from crops by farmers who put them up on posts in fields.

In the Wizard of Oz, the Scarecrow was the first friend that Dorothy made upon her arrival in Oz. Desperately searching for a brain, the Scarecrow often came up with many good ideas to bail the quartet out of trouble. When it was time for Dorothy to leave Oz, she told the Scarecrow that she would miss him "most of all." The Scarecrow was played by actor Ray Bolger in the 1939 film.
