About Samurai

Samurai comes from the term of military nobility from Japan. The Samurai were meant to serve the lord or aristocracy of feudal Japan. The Samurai date back to the sixth century and were foot soldiers. The Samurai were very proud men with a specific code of honor. Most of the Samurai dealt with day to day affairs, but those higher in ranking were advisors to the emperor of Japan. During the time of the Samurai there were also the Shogun who were religious clans. The warriors were all skilled in archery and mounted combat. The Samurai were employed by the emperor until the last 1800’s. The 1800’s brought a modernization to the culture and soon they began to decline in numbers as they were no longer thought to be needed.

Dressing up as Samurai

Dressing up as a Samurai can be rather fun. If you wish the traditional style you would need a Namban which is a Samurai Cuirass from the 16th century. This is the armor we have seen in movies like The Last Samurai. In this costume you have the full plate for the upper body, and the skirt style below with iron covering the legs. Then you have the helmet that was usually iron with a point at the top and hair hanging from the top. Other Samurai costumes are the under clothing in which you would have the Geisha style costume or Royal Samurai. The Geisha style is for the female set offering either a sexy costume for the adults or full length skirt for the children. There are also wigs to complete the outfit in the long haired style of the Samurai. Most Samurai’s would not be complete without the Katana, the Japanese sword.
