About Romeo

Romeo is a character from a Shakespeare play called Romeo and Juliet. They are the quintessential lovers and couples costume. Romeo was from the house of Montague. He first spied Juliet at a ball, but when he inquired about her he found out she was a Capulet. At the time a great feud between the two houses was raging, thus their love was forbidden. There are many famous lines from the play such as “Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo.” There have been many films made based on the play. The first was the most honest rendition. In the 90’s a more modern version was created. Romeo Must Die was also a play on the idea of the feud between two houses, but the meaning was more overt.

Dressing up as Romeo

Romeo existed in the late 1500's. Any costume you choose regarding Romeo will need to reflect the style of dress from this time period. Most Romeo costumes start with a pair of black hose, and a blue tunic. However, you can have any color tunic you wish. The tunic is made with a knit material, large puffed sleeves on the upper arms that pair down to a smaller sleeve. To help add to the tunic and hose, a sword would be needed. A renaissance hat witha feather and leather shoes will help complete the costume. Since Romeo is nothing without his Juliet do not forget to bring her along!
