About Roman Helmet

A Roman Helmet is called a Galea. Gladiators and Roman soldiers used to wear the helmets to protect them in fights. The design of Roman helmets varied throughout the different centuries. Sometimes they were created based on the crest of the current Caesar or an influential family crest. The Etruscans were responsible for the first design of the Roman helmet and then the Greeks were imperative in the design. Even the Gauls had some say in the helmet design. The most popular design is the imperial Gallic. This is the type we often see in movies like Gladiator. Helmets were made with bronze, silver, and other known metals at the time.

Roman helmets for costumes make a great accessory along with roman sandals to complete a Roman Soldier. The costume Roman helmets are not made out of metal, but a soft material of cotton and polyester. The material does resemble gold. It sits over the top of the head providing a covering for the neck and sides of the face. On top of the helmet is a brush. The brush is made from red fake fur.
