About Robert E. Lee

Arguably the most famous Confederate General of the American Civil War, Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807. He had a 32 year distinguished career and was asked by then-President Abraham Lincoln to head up the Union armies. However, Lee had to decline as his home state of Virginia was attempting to break off from the United States against his wishes. Nevertheless, a faithful general to whomever his Commander-in-Chief may have been, Robert E. Lee won many battles for the South, including the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Bull Run. He died in 1870, but not after aiding President Andrew Johnson in the reconstruction effort following the Civil War.
