About Puritans

Although often confused with the Pilgrims who came from Europe and settled in the New World, Puritans weren't neccessarily Pilgrims and vice versa. Known for their stringent religious beliefs and adherance to strict and radical Protestantism, Puritans could be found in both Europe and the American colonies from the 1600s onward. Some notable instances of depictions of Puritan life in the colonies can be seen in the works of Nathanial Hawthorne's most famous work, "The Scarlett Letter", and Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible," depicting the Salem Witch trials.

Dressing up as a Puritan

Even though they were uptight, the Puritans were certainly devout. In sizes to fit adult men, women, and children, there are black and white Puritan duds a-plenty to costume yourself in for a Puritan Party (perish the thought!) or a production of "The Crucible" or any other historically-themed play.

Ladies may want to dress as the infamous Hester Pryne of "The Scarlett Letter," taking a standard ladies Puritan Costume and pinning an embroidered "A" patch to the chest and clutching a baby doll to stand in for Hester's daughter, Pearl. Remember, the "A" stands for "Awesome!"

For a fun and funky take on the staid Puritan look, there is the Salem Witch costume in a short, sassy length and details that would make any old Goody Goodwife blush, complete with a black dress with white collar, a Puritan hat and frilly apron to compliment the short, flouncy skirt. Pair it up with some oh-so-shocking black thigh highs and clunky black heels
