About Purim

The name "Purim" translates to "Lots," which were drawn on this Jewish holiday that celebrates the Jewish Queen Esther who married a Babylonian king and saved her people from certain death. The king's wicked advisor, Haman, wanted to kill the Jews and had drawn up a plan involving drawing lots to determine which day he would do so. The plot was thwarted by Esther who revealed her heritage to her husband, the King and in doing so, helped to spare her people. The holiday is one of the rowdier ones with the Purim story read aloud from the Book of Esther in the synagogue and noisemakers broken out whenever Haman's name is mentioned. Also, cookies called "Hamantashen" are eaten durng the festival.

Dressing up for Purim

When re-enacting the story of Purim, you will certainly need a costume to become the heroic and beautiful Queen Esther. Included in the Esther costume set is a long, regal blue/violet gown with gold accessories and a crown. More colors are also available with the Shabas Queen and Purim Queen costumes.

Other costumes you will want to have on hand for Purim are a King costume and one for Haman. The "Hamantashen" cookie pastries are made to look like Haman's ears. Accessorize his costume with large ears to poke fun at this dastardly villain of the Purim tale.
