About Pumpkin

A pumpkin is labeled as a gourd, which is like a squash and part of the Cucurbitaceae family. Pumpkins are large or small round items that can be eaten. The word pumpkin is from the French pompon, but the UK changed it to pumpion, then America changed it further to pumpkin. Pumpkins are orange in color with brown tops or roots. It is unknown what the specific origin of the pumpkin is. However, the oldest seeds were dated to 7000 and 5500 BC in Mexico. Pumpkin is considered a fruit. They usually weigh 9 to 18 lbs, but the largest was weighed at 75lbs. Pumpkins have a ribbed skin, which is smooth to the touch. Not all pumpkins have to be orange, there are some which are green, yellow, white, red or even gray. The US grow pumpkins for Halloween as a decoration and food item. Thanksgiving is also known for the use of pumpkins in pie.

Dressing up as Pumpkins

Generally there is only one classic pumpkin costume, but as they grow more popular there are other choices. The Misses Pumpkin Spice costume has a conical shaped dress with a pumpkin hat. The typical pumpkin costume is a plush material made from orange with a black face sewn on the front. The face is just a mouth, nose, and eyes cut in the simplest form. The costume usually has a green leafy collar, and is capped with an orange round hat. Some costumes for infants have a round hat with the stem on the top. A bobble head pumpkin costume is another option for adults.
