Second in line after the Queen, a princess is the highest-ranking female member of female royalty. The title of princess is a hereditary one which is handed down to the daughter of the king and queen or inherited through marriage to a prince. Times have changed and often a princess can ascend to the throne as a ruling monarch without having to marry a prince or a king. Prior to modern times, Queen Elizabeth I was one of the few unmarried princesses to take on the mantle of Queen. Her father, King Henry VII had no surviving male heirs and The Virgin Queen was installed on the throe for a long and successful reign.
