About Princess Mulan

Mulan is the title character in the 1998 animated Walt Disney movie, Mulan, based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. Mulan is a smart, outspoken, ahead of her time protagonist who cares deeply about her family and country. In the movie her elderly father is drafted into the army when the Huns attack China. To save him, she dresses as a man and takes his place in the army with her horse Khan and her dragon guardian Mushu. While battling the Huns, Mulan meets Captain Li Shang, who she falls in love with, and who saves her life when her true identity is discovered by the Chinese army. After helping win the battle, Mulan saves the Emperor, who sends her back to her family a war hero.

Dressing up as Princess Mulan

In the beginning of the film, Mulan is training to become a perfect bride and be set up by the matchmaker. Honor your ancestors and do your duty as a daughter in a formal silk kimono with an obi (belt) in pink and purple colors. Tie your hair back in a tight bun, adorn with a hair ornament, and add white costume makeup to your face. Keep the sun off of your face with a painted paper parasol. To defeat the Huns, Mulan dressed in drag in a traditional Chinese warrior outfit that included grey clothes with black and green armor. Like Mulan, remember to stay true to your heart.
