About Pocahontas

Pocahontas lived from 1595 to 1617. She was a Native American living in what is now Virginia. When the English landed on their shores Pocahontas began to learn a little about the English. When John Smith was captured by the Powhatan tribe Pocahontas, then 10 or 12 took it upon herself to save him and make sure he was brought to Jamestown safely. History widely varies on the course of events that actually brought John Smith to Jamestown on that occasion, but we do know Pocahontas did learn the English ways and later married John Rolfe, and was renamed Rebecca Rolfe after marriage. Pocahontas saved John Smith again, but believed he was dead. It wasn’t until she was married and in England that she realized he had survived the gunshot wound. Pocahontas’ story has been widely adapted on the big screen, including by Disney.

Dressing up as Pocahontas

Dressing as Pocahontas requires moccasins, an Indian style dress, and long black hair. There are several costumes available in the Pocahontas style offering the Disney costume, adult, and children sizes for Native American costumes. There are also accessories such as the wig, Native American Headdress, and the appropriate shoes. Other costumes you might be interested in are John Smith, and Indian. The dress Pocahontas is usually seen in is made of hide. Typically the dress comes to a V at the knees, with short sleeves, and a rounded neck line. You can dress up this costume by adding Native American jewelery and adding color to the costume.
