Pirates are all the rage thanks to not only Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, but the Somali pirates sailing the seas and taking hostages, proving that pirates are still as seaworthy in the 21st century as they were hundreds of years ago. They've found their way into literature, such as Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" with the pirate Captain Flint, as well as newspapers with the capture of a present-day American captain by Somali pirates.

Not just male, there have also been female pirates in history, including Captain Anne Bonney.

Dressing up as Pirates

Arghh. Looking for a pirate costume, are ye? Anyone with the love of gold and strong rum can join in the fun, from little babies to the old and feeble. Whether ye fancy my pal Captain Jack Sparrow or prefer the metal appendages favored by Captain Hook, no pirate is complete without a long crop of hair and possibly a beard. Wear a long pirate wig and top it off with a tri-cornered Pirate Hat adorned with the Jolly Roger skull. Accessorize with a parrot on the shoulder, eye patch, or simple sword for plunderin' the town. Ladies may also want to unleash their inner swashbucklin' lass with a lady pirate costume of their own fancy, or one based on Pirates of the Caribbean's pirate queen, Elizabeth Swan.
