About Pirate Hats

More than just a fashion statement, hats were worn by pirates to protect the top of their scalps from the sun and other harsh elements while they were at sea. Some members of the pirate crew wore bandanas tied tightly around the top of their head, allowing their hair to flow out loosely from beneath the covering. Additionally, bandanas helped to keep sweat out of their eyes, more functional than fashionable. Other pirates -- particularly captains -- wore large tricorn hats with feathers in them or a Jolly Roger skull and crossbones on the front of them to help protect their heads, as well as denote rank.

Dressing up with a Pirate Hat

Top off your pirate finery with a fine hat to wear as you make friends and party guests walk the plank! Several styles are available in men's, women's, and unisex sizes. Gentlemen pirates may wish to wear the traditional tricorn, like the one favored by Captain Jack Sparrow -- available with or without attached synthetic hair and dreadlocks. A flatter, boat-shaped pirate hat with a Jolly Roger on the front and feathered plumes is also available in men's and ladies' sizes.

Elaborate -- and surprisingly alluring -- pirate hats are available for ladies to add to their costumes. A black lacy pirate hat is decorated with frills, feathers, and ribbons in shades of white and grey for a classy, yet classic look. The same style is also available in black trimmed with gold and red ribbons -- or in a gold-filligree decorated burgandy/wine color with large plumes of feathers and lace adorning this colorful creation.
