About Pioneer

A pioneer is a name that refers to settlers in America. A pioneer is technically someone who ventures out, settling territory, and creating a new place to live. Today a pioneer may be someone who creates an innovative business idea such as the internet. Daniel Boone was considered a pioneer because he settled in Kentucky when the New World was still largely uninhabited by European Settlers. Pioneers in fiction are found throughout films and novels. In these depictions the pioneers are often individuals seeking to better the life they had before. They would head out from the East to find property they could claim. Homesteaders would be another term. These people would find land, build a home, and then work the land. Sometimes the pioneers would bring their family. In the films the families often struggle, which is very close to actual history. The land was rough, food could be scarce, and drought or illness wiped out entire families and towns.

Dressing up as Pioneer

The costumes for a pioneer will date back to a fashion of the 1600’s and 1700’s. Clothing during that time was often shapeless dresses with white aprons, bonnets that covered a woman’s face, and leather shoes. For the men hose, short pants, dress shirts, vests, neckties, and tricorn hats were the norm. If you are going to dress as a pioneer you might elect to take a page from Daniel Boone or Davey Crocket. These men wore leather. Their pants and shirts were made from animal skins. Hats consisted of racoon fur, and they carried knives.
