About Peasant

A peasant was a worker of fields such as agricultural personnel. They would work small areas of land for the lord who owned it. The word Peasant comes from the 15th century French “paisant” meaning one from the pays or countryside. Peasants existed during the pre- industrial era helping to cultivate land in order to keep others from starving. They would harvest the food grown. The peasant society was very much a hierarchy. Often the peasants were poor monetarily speaking, but rich in food that would be sold to increase a land owners wealth. They were paid in food most often. Though some peasants could own their own land there were still taxes to be paid from the food they could sell, which still left them the underprivileged. At times of war peasants would be drafted to fill in the army as unskilled labourers often on the front lines to die first before the knights would hit the fields. After the Black Death Peasants were able to improve their odds and then the enlightenment helped them gain more.

Dressing up as Peasant##

There are a few types of peasant costumes for both men and women. The costumes fit adults and children. For woman the typical outfit was a peasant blouse in white. The blouse had long sleeves with a bit of a puff at the shoulders. The front would sit low with a ribbon through it to keep it closed. Over the peasant blouse a corset could be worn, but it is not always necessary. For the bottom of the costume a multicolored or single color skirt in an A line works best. The skirt is tight at the waist, but lose around the legs and hips flowing to the ankles. Some peasant costumes for woman include leather boots and a scarf around the head. The hose are tight fitting pants which could be knee or ankle length. Leather shoes and a peasant hat conclude the outfit unless you have a hoe to bring along to symbolize the work a peasant does.
