Pop- in with Mary Poppins and your Parasol! A parasol is a style of umbrella. Typically a parasol is designed to protect a person from the sun, while an umbrella is more for protection against the rain. Mary Poppins may have used an umbrella, but there is nothing saying you can’t use a parasol as part of your nanny costume. The parasol is made from a thinner material in most cases. Lace, silk, or other sheer material blocks the sun indirectly from the face without offering complete coverage. Parasols were used quite frequently in the 1800’s, especially in the southern states. However, the parasol is older than that. The Orient was the first to have parasols for their geisha.

Dressing up as Parasol

Since a parasol is an object it can be used in many different costumes. A Southern Belle costume will require a parasol to be truthful to the historical look. The parasol for this costume should be white or light in color. It is used as a flirtation device as well. For the Geisha your parasol choice should be more vibrant. Often the Asian costume requires a parasol with Asian art like yin and yang or a dragon. Clown costumes have been known to use parasols to make the costume more ridiculous. A black lace parasol works well for widow costumes or goth costumes.
