About Olive Oil

Olive Oil or Oyl as it is really spelled is Popeye’s love interest. She is a fictional character created in 1919 as a comic strip. The couple was one of the most popular comics in the earlier 1900s. There were cartoons and a movie created about the characters. Olive is considered a coy flapper. She is very thin, always has her hair in a bun, and always had a red shirt on. She was engaged to a Harold Hamgravy, but found other men were quite attractive. She was not immediately interested in Popeye, and they tended to fight, but he eventually won her over. She was also considered a damsel in distress in many cartoons and the film.

Dressing up as Olive Oil

Olive Oil’s costume is that of a flapper. So you will need a tight red shirt with long sleeves and a white collar. The bottom part of the costume is a knee length black skirt. To finish off the costume your hair would need to be black and in a bun. Black pumps are also part of the costume. Don’t forget Popeye to make the couples costume complete.
