About Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is a Dutch holiday, mostly celebrated in Germany. The main point of Oktoberfest was to celebrate Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese. The first festival was celebrated in 1810 during October. The festival is now the largest fair in Europe and perhaps the world with over six million guests every year. Beer is a central point for the festival as is the traditional German food. Oktoberfest has a special beer they brew for the festival each year that is darker and stronger than other beers they have. Typically during the festival there are costumes from the traditional period of 1810, live folk music, and plenty of fun.
Dressing up as Oktoberfest
To dress for Oktoberfest you have a few choices that will fit nicely in your budget. The typical costume of Germany is the Lederhosen and Dirndl. Lederhosen are short pants with suspenders. The pants can be plain or embroidered. The shirt is usually white with embroidering, and some individuals add a vest or coat to the ensemble. The men also wear knee socks with clogs or other traditional shoes. The Dirndl is for the women. It is either a long skirt or short skirt that is formfitting, with embroidery. The top is also formfitting with a blouse and then either the dress or a vest overlay. Hansel and Gretel costumes are typically seen at Oktoberfest. Beer girl costumes or waitress costumes would also fit in nicely.
