About Octoberfest

Octoberfest or Oktoberfest is a sixteen day festival in Germany. The festival though shared around the world originated in Munich. The name of the festival is slightly misleading as the festival actually starts in September and runs into October. The festival celebrates the Bavarian culture of the past. The festival began in 1818, and has been on every year since. Six well known breweries host the festival. Not only is beer very important, but usual Bavarian cuisine such as bratwurst, sauerkraut, and other foods are available.

Dressing up as Octoberfest

Octoberfest provides a certain dress code for many of those who attend. Costumes for Octoberfest are based on early Bavarian dress. For men Octoberfest is a time to bring out the lederhosen and white dress shirts. Lederhosen are shorts or short pants, with suspenders. The clothing does often have intricate embroidery patterns. For women, Octoberfest costumes are dirndls. A dirndl has a peasant blouse, with a short skirt. Clogs are often the shoes worn at the festival.
