The Teenange Mutant Ninja Turtles got their start as a comic before being given new life as a popular cartoon in the late '80s and early '90s. Four, avenging turtles with madd martial arts skills (as taught to them by their mentor and sensai, Splinter, a large talking rat) named for classic painters, Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, and Donatello fought crime from beneath the city sewers. Hit by radioactive goop right out of the pet shop, they grew to man-size and became a quartet of wisecracking critters. The Ninja Turtles often climb through manhole covers up to the surface to fight off the evil Shredder and his Foot Clan.
