The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing -- or NASCAR -- began in 1948 with its roots firmly entrenched in the Southern states of the U.S. Television helped to turn this into a global phenomenon with millions of fans worldwide. NASCAR racing comes in second in televised sports viewership, right behind the NFL. Pretty impressive statistics! NASCAR is headquartered at Daytona Beach, FL (with offshoots in Charlotte, NC) and its highest honor is to win the Sprint Cup. The sport is home to such revered names in racing as the legendary Dale Earnhardt (and his son, Dale, Jr.), Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty. Each driver has his (or her, in the case of Danica Patrick!) own number on their car and is sponsored by one or more companies whose logos they sport on their racing gear and car.
