About Memorial Day

Held on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a holiday which honors men and women in the various branches of the United States' military who lost their lives in both wartime and peace. The holiday was first observed in 1868, following the Civil War and was known as "Decoration Day," named for families of soldiers' "decorating" the graves of deceased service members in their families with flowers and patriotic symbols. As time marched on, it came to be known as Memorial Day and honored those who lost their lives in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the current Middle Eastern conflict. The holiday is celebrated with families visiting cemetaries, flying the flag at half-mast, and with veterans selling poppies to benefit organizations.

Dressing up for Memorial Day

Wear military-themed costumes for parades honoring the servicemen and women of the United States, both those who have fallen in combat and those still alive on active duty.Army and Navy costumes are represented with both sailor costumes, as well as dress blues along with camouflage attire.

Ladies may want to wear USO-style costumes with a pinup flair, in lady army or lady navy costumes.

Better yet, don't just celebrate... Decorate with patriotic flags or lawn ornaments to show your patriotic pride for your country and its servicemen.
