It was founded in 1940 by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, CA. McDonald's mascot, Ronald McDonald is considered to be one of the most recognizable characters in all the world, fallingslightly behind Santa Claus in recognition among children and adults. McDonalds operates thousands of franchises across the country and worldwide and are known for their charitable efforts, notably Ronald McDonald House which offers overnight housing to parents of sick children in hospitals. McDonald's is represented by a large, yellow "M" which symbolizes the "Golden Arches" to McDonald Land.
