About Mariachi

With their wide hats (or sombreros) and decorative, torreador-like costumes, Mariachi have been a part of Mexican musical culture since the 19th century. Originally, roving laborers who sang and played instruments for extra pocket change, the Mariachi evolved into respected musicians with a history and style of their own. Mariachi musicians frequently play Mexican weddings, Quincianeras (the 15th birthday party for girls, the equivalent of the American "Sweet 16"), or seranade couples and women in restaurants. The typical instrumental configuration of a Mariach band usually includes two violins, two trumpets, two guitars, and a bass.

Dressing up as a Mariachi

Bring a bit of Mexico over the border with a mariachi costume to your next party. Whether it's Cinco de Mayo or any other party, it's always time to fiesta with an instrument in hand and a sombrero on your head! Try on a classical Spaniard costume with black pants, jacket, and a red cumberbund but swap out the hat with a traditional, Mariachi-style sombrero. Wear a white shirt with a black string tie and you'll be ready to seranade a sweet senorita of your own!

Ladies can shake their maracas with a Mariachi Mama costume, styled with a short, black dress with a white, off-the-shoulder peasant blouse trimmed in red beneath. Also included are a pair of rattling maracas and a feminine-styled sombrero hat. Ole!
