About Maid Marion
Maid Marion or Lady Marian Fitzwalter of Leaford was a legendary figure in Robin Hood. The modern story is set in the 16th century with Robin Hood rescuing the poor from the Sheriff of Nottingham. Maid Marion however, dates back to the 1200’s. Despite knowing Maid Marion as a child, Robin Hood is at first rebuffed in the story regarding his feelings. Maid Marion eventually falls for Robin Hood and his good deeds. At the end she is rescued from the terrible Sherriff who tried to marry her in the absence of her Cousin King Richard. There are several telling of Robin Hood and his Maid Marion. The latest telling was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, Sean Connery as King Richard, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Maid Marion. There have also been spoofs of the tale as well as a Disney version.
Dressing up as Maid Marion
Maid Marion will be in a renaissance costume. The dress is tight fitting in the bust with a corset style. Then the dress will flare out to hang loose around the hips and ankles. The dress can be made of cotton, silk, or any material of that time period. The sleeves are long with a small bell shape. Usually in the scenes from the movie Maid Marion has on a hat and veil to cover her features. The shoes will be slippers rather than boots or high heels. The dress can be red, blue, burgundy, or purple. Robin Hood will make a great accompanying costume for Maid Marion. Other costume ideas include Renaissance, Folk, or Medieval Gown.
