Males can exceed 550 pounds when they reach adulthood. The lion is the second largest cat, with the tiger being the largest. Most lions live in Africa or Asia. For most parts of the world the only way to watch these fascinating creatures is to go to the zoo. Lions can live to be 14 years of age depending on the habitat and their status within the pride. The pride is their social group. Male lions tend to stay on their own, traveling around the desert, and during mating season they will cozy up to any female that will allow it. Female lions are more social. They head the pride, with multiple females helping to take care of the young. Female young will stay in the pride, but the males will eventually leave. Male lions mark their territory, and will try to keep it from other male lions.
