About Laurel Crowns

In ancient times, laurel crowns were a sign of victory. Kings wore them in addition to crowns of gold and a laurel wreath was awarded to a victor in battle or to those who excelled in their chosen field. Writers and poets who were given awards for their work were called Poet Laurettes ... and still are to this day! The saying "resting on you laurels" refers to relying upon past victories to bolster your reputation rather than achieving something new.

Dressing up with Laurel Crowns

Beware the Ides of March! Or at least wear a laurel crown on March 15th, the day Julius Caesar perished. Top off your Caesar costume with a gold laurel wreath or standard laurel wreath fit for a Roman king. Actually, it would make a great addition to any Roman senator or accessory for a Greek god costume! Pair it up with a toga and a good pair of sandals and you'll be ready to issue forth proclamations on the Senate floor with one hand on your parchment and another on your dagger! Beware the Ides, indeed!
