About Lady Liberty

The Statue of Liberty or Lady Liberty as it can be called is one of New York’s most famous points of interest. The Lady Liberty was brought to the Americas in 1886 given to us by the French to symbolize our countries centennial. The statue was stationed at Liberty Island in New York Harbor to welcome visitors, immigrants, and any American returning from travel. The statue is made out of copper giving it that green tint. France wanted to give us the statue to symbolize friendship between the two countries as well as for our Independence. Frederic Bartholdi sculpted the statue along with help from Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower. Lady Liberty as a statue is that of a robed woman holding a torch. There is also a pattern of gold leaf which was originally made of copper. Glass panes replaced copper later on. The statue is 151 feet tall, but the pedestal and foundation make it 305 feet total. There is a sister statue in Paris. There are also several replicas of the statue throughout the world and US, such as the New York New York Hotel and Casino Replica in Las Vegas. The Paris Lady Liberty was used in the second film National Treasure as a way to leave behind a clue to a hidden treasure. Of course it was only fiction.

Dressing up as Lady Liberty

To become the Statue of Liberty one will need a very specific costume. Costume sizes range in children and adults. There is also something for just about every budget to honor Lady Liberty, if only by a head piece. The typical costume construction is a green tinted robe, in the same style as that of the statue, meaning it has a drape on the front. The robe goes to the ankles where leather sandals are needed for the look. In one hand the costume wearer needs a tablet. The other hand carries the torch, in green, with fake flame. To finish the look a headpiece of green is needed. The headpiece is a sunburst like structure sitting like a wreath or Crown. Consider Uncle Sam or George Washington for a paired costume. You could also have the Eiffel Tower if you want to be world monuments.
