About Keystone Cop
Unless you grew up in the early 1900’s or love film history you might not have heard of the Keystone Cops. The Keystone Cops was a set of silent films created by comedians. The premise was to have a group of incompetent policemen who acted out in the films. The name Keystone came from the film company who produced the films during 1912 to 1917. A number of the actors are unknown because the actors changed throughout the films. Only Edgar Kennedy, Ford Sterling, and Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle are well known from the films. Today the term keystone cop is not used very often, but when it is it is as a buzzword for any group who makes mistakes. Infamous BTK serial killer Dennis Rader used the term when he referred to the cops that took 30 years to identify him. Policy Academy films also brought the concept back to the forefront with their bumbling comedic movies.
Dressing up as Keystone Cop
The period of time that the keystone cop existed brings us the typical costume for this type of cop. The keystone cop costume will come with a jacket and pants in blue with gold braid trim on the sleeves. The jacket also has gold buttons all the way down the front and a high collar. A derby hat is required to finish out the costume. Think Sherlock Holmes or Constable costumes. You will need to purchase a night stick, and have a handlebar moustache to finish the costume.
