About Josephine

The first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine de Beauharnais became the first Empress of the French. She was widowed during the Reign of Terror when her husband was beheaded. She had two children by him, and her descendants include Danish, Swedish, and Greek royalty.

When Napoleon declared himself Emperor in 1804, his wife Josephine ascended to the throne alongside him. When they first met, Josephine was a widow. After a rather romantic courtship for the age, Napoleon married Josephine. Although the two cheated on one another, the reason for their divorce was Josephine's infertility, resulting from stress during her imprisonment during the Reign of Terror or a fall from a crumbled staircase. She agreed to a divorce so that Napoleon could remarry and have an heir to the throne. In spite of their divorce, they remained friends and one of Napoleon's last words on his deathbed was "Josephine."
