About Jheri Curl

The Jheri Curl was a popular style of semi-relaxed hair worn by African Americans in the {70s} and {80s}. It was named for the man who made it popular, Jheri Redding, a hairdresser and chemist. The Jheri Curl left the wearer with a series of long, spiral curls with a glossy sheen to them. A Jheri Curl was a two-step process, involving first applying a softener (mild relaxer) to loosen Afro curls and then perm rods were applied to the hair to set it in position. A popular product known as "Jheri Curl Juice" added shine to the curls. Michael Jackson and Rick James wore jheri curl styles in the '70s and '80s.
